About this site

m2m.foundation is a reference on machine-to-machine technology. The name describes the subject: M2M is the base layer — the foundation — that connected products are built on.

The site explains the stack in the order a device depends on it: identity first, then connectivity, messaging, management and finally settlement. It is written for engineers choosing between options and for anyone who wants to know what actually happens when a meter, a vehicle or a machine tool reports in.

What this site is not

It is not an organisation, a foundation in the legal sense, or a charity. It does not raise, accept or distribute funds. It sells nothing and carries no advertising. It is not connected with any organisation that uses the initials M2M, and the initials are used here only in their engineering sense: machine-to-machine.

Sources and method

Every dated claim points to a published standard: IETF RFCs for CoAP, Observe and OSCORE; OASIS and ISO/IEC numbers for MQTT and AMQP; 3GPP release numbers for the cellular features; GSMA document numbers for remote SIM provisioning; ISO 15118 for Plug & Charge; RFC 9110 for HTTP 402. Where a year is given it is the year of publication of the version named. The pages are reviewed when a standard they cite is revised; last review September 2026.
